Sermaye Piyasası Kurulu (SPK), Borsa İstanbul‘s new decisions aim to protect investor rights and ensure reliable, transparent, and stable markets in light of recent developments.

Short Selling Prohibited

The Board announced that short selling transactions in Borsa Istanbul markets are prohibited until the end of the session on April 25, 2025. Additionally, it was decided to facilitate the buyback of public companies’ shares and to extend the equity ratio during the continuation of margin trading operations.

The statement from SPK reads:

“In light of recent events in Borsa Istanbul Inc. markets, some measures have been taken by our Board. Since March 23, 2025, the transactions carried out on Borsa Istanbul Inc. have been closely monitored by our Board to ensure the reliable, transparent, efficient, stable, fair, and competitive functioning and development of the capital market and to protect the rights and interests of investors. Due to recent developments in Borsa Istanbul Inc. markets, it has become necessary for our Board to take some precautions. Therefore, from March 24, 2025, until the end of the session on April 25, 2025, short selling transactions in Borsa Istanbul Inc. equity markets are prohibited, and it has been decided to facilitate the buyback of public companies’ shares and to relax the application of the equity ratio during the continuation of margin trading operations.”
